In the grip of a severe famine

“I saw many carcasses along the road. The whole area is abandoned and dead,” was how Fr. Marek ROZ described the situation in the Dol Dol mission in Maasai district.

Maasai is a tribe of herdsmen and is severely affected by the long and continuing drought.

Many people have already left their villages, especially the men with their cattle. Women and children who are left behind fight hard for their survival. They are threatened by wild animals like elephants, who invade human the settlements in search of food and water.

People are really scared. The missionaries appeal to the forest guards to chase the animals away and to provide the minimum security to the people.

One of the main problems in the region is the lack of infrastructure, not so much the drought itself. There are no good roads, no access to clean drinking water, and no electricity.

he SVD is trying to establish a good education system in the area, which will enable the people to build up structures that would ensure their survival in crisis situations too.
