Witnessing to the WORD

St. Cayetan’s parish in Palpalá has a population of 30,000 with whom our three confreres share their lives.

The parish is spread over three urban and eight rural communities. (Another 30,000 belonging to the Holy Spirit parish are now served by the diocesan clergy - earlier the SVDs had taken care them).

SVDs are in the parish for the last 60 years. Many former missionaries who served here have left an indelible mark on the lives of the people in Palpalá through their dedicated work among the poor and the landless.

Industrialization, privatization and unemployment have thrown the people into poverty. Street crimes, alcoholism, suicides and HIV/AIDS are endemic in the suburbs of Palpalá.

Our confreres in Palpalá - Pablo  Miguel ARMADA and Carlos HABERKON write, “But we also see many signs of life and hope in the small communities in the various efforts of the communities, missionary groups for the youth and children.

During this year of the Divine Word Missionaries Reading the Bible, we earnestly pray for more justice and dignity for these people, whom we are called to lead.”
