New Apostolic Nuncio in Benin and Togo


Pope Benedict XVI has appointed an American SVD, Michael Blume, to be Apostolic Nuncio in Benin and Togo.

Archbishop Blume, 59, until now was undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers. He received episcopal ordination in St. Peter’s Basilica and now has the rank of Archbishop.

Archbishop Blume was born in South Bend, Indiana, on May 30, 1946. He was ordained a priest on December 23, 1972. He was missioned to Ghana where he was a teacher of theology in Ghana's Cape Coast Regional Seminary from 1975 to 1983. He then became provincial of the Society of the Divine Word in Ghana, Benin and Togo (1983-1990), and secretarygeneral of the Divine Word missionaries in Rome from 1990 to 1994.

He began to serve on the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers in April 1995. He was named undersecretary of the council in April 2000.
