The SVD Parish reaches 100 years!

The St. Mary’s Catholic parish at Vicksburg, Mississippi will celebrate 100 years in 2006. The parish was established by the Society of the Divine Word in 1906. It provided a place of refuge for African-American Catholics during segregation.

In addition to the church, the SVDs and the SSpS established a school which trained and developed many parishioners and school members so that they could productively contribute to their communities throughout the world.

Today, St. Mary’s serves the needs of the entire Vicksburg community. (In a Word, March 2005)
